It's sad when golf season ends, it seems to go by so quickly. I managed about 34 rounds this year, a mark that is pretty good for me compared to years past. Now, the cold weather is upon us. The leaves are off the trees, my clubs are out of the trunk and there is no sign of golf in sight. How am I going to get through the winter?
(A cruel reminder of what winter was like last year in Philadelphia... that's my car)
How to Survive the Winter Without Golf
As you can tell by the picture above, you won't always be able to play golf during the winter. If not for the cold, maybe the snow. Once you get those unusually warm days, the sn0w might be on the ground, so what do you do? Here are a few suggestions to help us golf addicts get through the brutal off season:
Read About Golf: If you're reading this, it's step one. There are countless websites and blogs dedicated to golf. Just because it's winter doesn't mean I'll stop writing. It's a great time to catch up on product reviews, golf course reviews, and golf trip information to get you ready for the next season. Airlinetickets.org has an article on 50 Blogs to Read Before Going on a Golf Vacation. That's a good start!Build a "Driving Range": Doesn't seem realistic? For most people it might not be but if you have a garage or basement, it can happen. A good friend of mine bought some netting and a video camera, strung it up in his garage and worked on his swing all winter. If you have the money, maybe a golf simulator is in order. Try an indoor range or practice facility like that have at Turning Stone Resort if you can't do it yourself. Good luck!Plan a Golf Trip: If you read my blog or follow my radio show, you know I love golf trips. To me, it's what golf is all about. Getting away with friends (or family), seeing a new place, and playing some great golf. I am yet to take a winter golf trip but that's going to change this winter. I will be taking a long weekend to play golf. If you can't do a winter trip, start looking into your summer trip. You don't have to book but it's nice to start looking and dream of what's to come. Follow A Golf Show: Whether it's a radio show, or online show, or a TV show, these can often be entertaining. Some of them (primarily radio) allow you to call in an interact. I started getting into The Big Break on the Golf Channel to help cure my addiction. I have also started my own online radio show to help myself as well as others get their "fix". Use the Internet: If you have a desk job, chances are you spend some time, especially at lunch, on the internet. You can find just about anything you need golf related on here. You can have your very own PGA Instructor (see www.fixyourgame.com) or get into my new favorite thing, a golf forum. You can then discuss golf with other addicts just like yourself! It's fun and you learn there are other people feeling your pain. Think of it as Golf Therapy! I'm on The Hackers Paradise if you are looking to join a good one. Before I know it, golf season will be upon me again. I'll be complaining about the heat and slow play on public courses throughout the country but for now, I want to complain about missing golf.
(Golf in early Springtime will be here before you know it... this is at Lake of Isles in Connecticut)
